50 AMP 120/240V Marine Shore Power Surge Protection

The Bad Wolf MSP50A-1 is a heavy-duty inline surge protector designed specifically for 50 amp 120/240V marine shore power systems. It installs inline between the marina shore power pedestal and your boat, or between the pedestal and a 50 amp marine shore power extension cord, providing dedicated surge protection before incoming shore power reaches your vessel.

The MSP50A-1 provides a 50,000 amp (50kA) surge current rating and is designed for continuous operation at up to 50 amps on 120/240V split-phase marine shore power systems.

Digital Shore Power Voltage Display

A built-in digital voltmeter continuously displays the incoming line-to-line voltage, allowing you to quickly view the shore power voltage while connected.

Marine Locking Shore Power Connections

The MSP50A-1 uses SS2-50P and SS2-50R marine shore power connectors with threaded locking collars. When properly mated and secured, the locking connections provide a secure, weather-resistant connection suitable for marine shore power applications.

Heavy-Duty Marine Construction

The surge protection components are housed inside a rugged NEMA 4X enclosure. The enclosure measures approximately 7.5 inches long × 4.75 inches wide × 3 inches high.

The standard MSP50A-1 is approximately 26 inches overall length, measured from the extreme end of the male connector to the extreme end of the female connector. The fully assembled standard version weighs approximately 6.4 pounds.

Available in Multiple Overall Lengths

The MSP50A-1 is available in several finished lengths to accommodate different shore power installations:

  • MSP50A-1 – Standard approximately 26-inch overall length
  • MSP50A-1-6 – 6 ft overall length
  • MSP50A-1-10 – 10 ft overall length
  • MSP50A-1-15 – 15 ft overall length

Overall length is measured from the extreme end of the male shore power connector to the extreme end of the female shore power connector. Additional custom lengths may also be available.

Installation

MSP50A-1 Installation & Use

The Bad Wolf MSP50A-1 is designed for inline use with a standard 50A 120/240V marine shore power connection. No permanent hardwiring is required for normal operation.

Connection Order

  1. Turn OFF the shore power pedestal breaker before making or removing any connections.
  2. Connect the SS2-50P male connector of the MSP50A-1 to the 50A shore power pedestal connection.
  3. Fully engage and tighten the threaded locking collar to secure the connection.
  4. Connect the SS2-50R female connector of the MSP50A-1 to either:
    • the boat's 50A shore power inlet, or
    • a compatible 50A marine shore power extension cord.
  5. Fully engage and tighten the locking collar on the female connection.
  6. Verify that all connectors are properly seated and secured.
  7. Turn the shore power pedestal breaker ON.
  8. Check the digital display to verify the incoming line-to-line shore power voltage before operating onboard loads.

Important Use Information

  • For use only with compatible 50A 120/240V marine shore power systems.
  • Maximum continuous current is 50 amps.
  • Do not use damaged, burned, loose, corroded, or overheated plugs, receptacles, cords, or connectors.
  • Keep all locking collars fully engaged during use to help maintain a secure, weather-resistant connection.
  • Do not submerge the surge protector or any shore power connection.
  • Position the enclosure where it will not be subjected to standing water, excessive mechanical stress, or damage from dock traffic.
  • Always disconnect shore power before inspecting or servicing the unit.
  • The digital display indicates line-to-line voltage only. It is not a substitute for a complete shore power wiring or pedestal fault analyzer.

Recommended connection:
